We propose that the BFDV replication-associated protein gene, Rep, represents the most rational antiviral target, because Rep is required for initiation and continuation of rolling-circle replication. RNA-interference-based inhibition of circovirus Rep expression has previously reduced Rep expression and virus production in porcine circovirus models, supporting Rep-directed inhibition as a plausible strategy for BFDV antiviral development.
