We actually obtained the original budgerigar samples referenced in this work from the US Armed Forces Pathology Lab. Thank you!
However after several attempts at realtime-PCR for both APV and PBFDV we had to conclude that the samples were too degraded for analysis. Samples stored in a formalin-liquid state get degraded pretty quickly. It was worth a shot though!
We have successfully amplified PBFDV from feathers from FM birds that were at least 15 years old, so dry samples are better.
As a curtesy to the US Armed Forces we choose to publish the results here, although they never got a formal letter from me while I was employed at the National Veterinary Institute in Oslo, Norway.
